Lee Middle School teacher named Georgia VFW Teacher of the Year

Lee Middle School chorus teacher Bonnie Krider has been named as the Georgia Veterans of Foreign Wars' 2018 Middle School teachers of the year for the state of Georgia.

Krider was nominated by a fellow teacher, and honored with the VFW's "Smart/Maher National Citizenship Education Teacher Award"  locally by VFW Post 2667 in Newnan and later at the Georgia VFW 5th District level before being awarded the state honor.

The VFW award recognizes teachers at elementary, middle and high school levels each year for exemplary commitment to teaching American history, citizenship and patriotism to their students. Teachers whose curriculum focuses on citizenship education topics for at least half of the school day in a classroom environment can be nominated for the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award.

Krider's honor extends Coweta County school's streak of state-level VFW honors.  History teachers John Garner of Newnan High School of and Samantha Clark of Arnall Middle School were 2017 VFW’s state winners.

VFW Post 2667 Junior Vice Commander Thomas Fetchet recognized Krider and Lee Middle before the Board of Education in March. Krider has been invited to the annual VFW convention in Macon this June to be recognized as a state winner. National winners are selected in July.
